Charlotte Convention Center is just under 1 mile from the hotel. LOCATION, especially for any events at spectrum stadium. Also, I enjoyed the valet parking in the private deck so I didn’t have to worry about my vehicle as much. Requesting my vehicle through the link was super easy and convenient.

"These families refuse to allow him to be a figure of division and instead take the opportunity to come together and grapple with hard history and find the family tie that exists," she says. The work is being guided by Susan Glisson, a Mississippi historian who has worked for years to help disparate groups reckon with the country's fraught racial history. Lee and his sister, Tracy Lee Crittenberger, say they were surprised at first that the descendants of the enslaved families wanted to get to know them, but they've found the conversations fruitful. He's been working with the National Park Service to honor the legacy of the families enslaved at Arlington House, because he says the house would not have existed without slave labor.
The descendants of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and those of the people the Lee family enslaved came together for the first time at Arlington House on Saturday. "They built the plantation house. They took care of the fields. ... They took care of the livestock. And they took care of the people," he says. "So their stories are just as important as those stories of the people who enslaved them." Arlington House is located inside Arlington National Cemetery, and is a 10-minute walk from the Arlington Cemetery Visitor Center/parking area.
With the establishment of the National Cemetery, Arlington House was primarily used as the headquarters and administrative office of the Cemetery, as well as living quarters for the Superintendent and family. Robert E. Lee's reputation recovered in the years following the war and he was lauded for promoting reunion and reconciliation between the north and south. Political leaders and the Press viewed his taking the path of reconciliation, rather than rejectionism, as important in cementing the bonds of union between north and south.

Torres is part of the group working to bring back memories of her ancestors, as well as reconcile with the family that enslaved them. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
During the American Civil War, the house was seized by the Union Army who proceeded to turn the plantation into a military cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery. Today, the National Park Service serves as the steward of this important resource to ensure its preservation for future generations. The property is connected to many important figures, issues and events in United States history.Over the 60 years leading up to the Civil War, Arlington House was also home to nearly 100 enslaved African Americans who lived and labored on the estate.
The entablature and roof structure were built of wood and painted to resemble marble. Both wings were completed by 1804, but the signature center block was not completed until 1818. Custis's cousin, David Meade Randolph3, had developed a type of hard stucco which he called "hydraulic cement" and convinced Custis to cover the bricks with his stucco which was then etched and faux painted to resemble sandstone.
An early opponent of the institution of slavery, she started a school for the enslaved families at Arlington and began ministering to them in her Episcopalian faith. Many prominent Americans embraced the project as a solution to the nation's racial problems, including Bushrod Washington, Henry Clay and Abraham Lincoln who continued to support the plan to resettle free Blacks after he became president. The colonization project was opposed by abolitionists and most enslavers alike, and never came close to fulfilling the desires of its proponents. At most, only 12,000 former slaves were resettled in Africa, primarily in Liberia, and many died from disease, malnutrition and other causes after resettlement.
Custis's will provided that freedom for his enslaved could be delayed for up to five years so that their labor could be used to pay off the debts and bequests. Like a military taskmaster, Lee did not hesitate to put the enslaved to work to pay off the debts, separating them from their families and hiring them out to other plantations and employers. By 1860, all but one of the enslaved families had experienced some degree of separation from loved ones.

The After, Where the Final Product is a Model and a Presentation
Instructional activities are the specific ways in which students interact with the course content. These activities run the gamut from watching educational videos, creating posters or presentations, completing a group project or playing learning-based games. Successful lesson plans often contain a mix of instructional strategies and activities, since asking students to adapt to different modes of learning is an effective way to keep them engaged. Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe introduced backward design in their book Understanding by Design.
According to these critics, the structured, step-by-step nature of Backward Design could potentially stifle spontaneity and limit opportunities for exploratory learning. This could be particularly problematic in subjects like the arts, where creative exploration is key. However, proponents argue that the time investment upfront often leads to more effective and efficient teaching down the line.
Determine appropriate assessments
Normally, or with traditional lesson planning, you focus on standards and learning objectives. Design your tests and assessments first, then figure out your lesson plans, then teach your students. The backward design approach to curriculum development first establishes educational goals and then builds assessment and instruction to serve those goals. The process of planning assignments and lessons by instructors to achieve pre-set instructional goals is called backwards mapping. In Understanding by Design, Wiggins and McTighe argue that backward design is focused primarily on student learning and understanding.
You might hear teachers asking, "What are the desired outcomes?" or "What evidence of learning will we accept?" These questions show that the influence of Backward Design is widespread and still growing. Wiggins and McTighe have created a six-part checklist built on the acronym WHERETO that consists of key elements that should be included in your instructional materials and learning activities. You might wonder what the true difference is between traditional and backward design lesson plans. The idea of Backward Design comes from Wiggins & McTighe and suggests that learning experiences should be planned with the final assessment in mind.

For starters, it ensures that your students will never be flabbergasted or taken by surprise by testing materials.
Project-Based Learning (PBL)
The old-school way of designing lessons—let's call it "Forward Design"—starts with the teaching materials and activities, sort of like making up the clues for your treasure hunt before you even know where the treasure is hidden. Authentic assessment is achieved when you have considered the perspective of your student and built your assessment after you have created well-thought-out learning outcomes. Assessment is “the process of using tools and techniques to collect information about student learning. In other words, assessment is the way teachers see their students’ learning” (Gareis & Grant, p. 2, 2015).
Valid and accepted measurements will vary from discipline to discipline and include both quantitative and qualitative measures. As the course designer, you decide what kind of measurements will work best for your subject. The important thing is that there is some way to identify whether or not learning outcomes are being met.
By defining what students should know or be able to do by the end of a lesson, educators can offer a more targeted and effective learning experience. For instance, it's difficult to set specific, narrow learning goals for interdisciplinary courses like “Environmental Science” that integrate biology, chemistry, and social science. The challenge lies in encapsulating the breadth of these disciplines into a set of focused objectives without diluting the complexity and richness of the subject matter.
Finally, think about how you can best prepare students to be successful on an assessment and achieving the outcomes. This planning involves identifying learning materials, activities for students to complete inside or outside of class, and what teaching strategies you will use. The key element in Backward Design is alignment; activities need to support the learning outcomes and prepare students for successful performance on the assessments, and the assessments must directly align with the outcomes.
Curriculum theorists like Jay McTighe have developed specific materials to assist educators in applying this method effectively. Curriculum theorist Jay McTighe, another co-creator of Backward Design, highlights how the approach can be adapted for different subjects, age groups, and educational settings. This adaptability makes it a popular choice for a wide range of educational contexts, from K-12 to higher education and corporate training. One of the most frequently cited challenges of Backward Design is the time commitment required for planning. Educators like Linda Darling-Hammond have noted that preparing comprehensive plans and aligning them with assessments and activities can take substantial time. Information that fits within this question is the lowest priority content information that will be mentioned in the lesson, unit, or course.
Unlike in backward lesson design, the assessment here is created after the lessons. Therefore, a teacher could risk omitting certain facets of the lessons from the final assessment, only acknowledging in hindsight that they probably could have saved valuable class time by skipping certain units or activities. When an assessment is created after the lessons have taken place, a teacher risks covering course content that does not add value to the overall lesson or factor into the final assessment. Once you know the standards your students are expected to meet by a certain grade level, make a list of all the foundational knowledge they need to reach that goal.
Sometimes, the assessments do not match the learning goals, and it becomes a frustrating experience for students and instructors. Use the list below to help brainstorm assessment methods for the learning goals of the course. Educational theory for designing courses by starting with learning outcomes first, then creating assessments, and course activities. In the second stage of backward design, instructors create the assessments students will complete in order to demonstrate evidence of learning and even progress towards achievement of the learning objectives.
The second question above allows the instructor to focus on more important knowledge, the knowledge and skills that are important to know and do. Finally, with the third question, instructors begin to detail the enduring understandings, overarching learning goals, and big ideas that students should retain. By answering the three questions presented at this stage, instructors will be able to determine the best content for the course. As previously stated, backward design is beneficial to instructors because it innately encourages intentionality during the design process.
Arlington National Cemetery was established by Brigadier General Montgomery C. Meigs, who commanded the garrison at Arlington House, appropriated the grounds June 15, 1864, for use as a military cemetery. His intention was to render the house uninhabitable should the Lee family ever attempt to return. A stone and masonry burial vault in the rose garden, 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep, and containing the remains of 1,800 Bull Run casualties, was among the first monuments to Union dead erected under Meigs' orders. Meigs himself was later buried within 100 yards of Arlington House with his wife, father and son; the final statement to his original order.
Arlington National Cemetery expansion
He is a descendant of James Parks, who was born into slavery on the property. After he was freed during the Civil War, Parks continued to work there and went on to work for Arlington National Cemetery for 61 years. He is the only person born on the property who was later interred at the cemetery. Many participants said that the nation is still vexed by race, still struggling mightily to find its way forward.

The plantation was started in 1803 by George Washington Parke Custis, the stepgrandson of George Washington. Lee married Custis’s daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, in 1831, at the home and the couple lived there until just after the Civil War began. The reunion, long in the planning, was an opportunity to “touch people and inspire people and celebrate our shared past together,” said Hammond, who is a family historian and occasionally gives tours of the property.

This is the first time Torres has been back to Arlington House since she was a child. During this renovation, the National Park Service worked to uncover and restore as much information as possible about those enslaved at the site. But it stands in stark contrast to the main house, where Lee's accounts and possessions were meticulously preserved over the more than 150 years since his death. In this cottage, Charles and Maria gave birth to eight of their 10 children. As a result, the descendants of Maria and Charles celebrate their direct descent from the first, First Lady, Martha Washington.

She returned to Arlington House only once in 1873, a few months prior to her death, but stayed for only a few hours unable to bear the changes that the war and Union occupation had wrought. In 1863, the government levied a tax of $92.07 against the Arlington House Plantation, which could have been easily paid except that Mary Lee, the legal owner, was in Richmond and could not travel to the area to pay the tax. She attempted to have payment made by a relative, Phillip Fendall, former district attorney for the District of Columbia, but the tax collectors refused to accept payment from a third party, and Arlington was seized for nonpayment of taxes. The confiscation also included the 17 acres given to Maria Syphax by her father, George Washington Parke Custis, as no deed had been conveyed with the gift.

Luckily, the house was purchased by someone with the foresight and cash to give it the to-the-studs restoration it so badly needed. By 2012, it had made an astounding recovery and become a fantastic, livable showpiece. This vast Beaux Arts/Italian Renaissance Revival palace was built between 1910 and 1914 by winery owner Secundo Guasti. So prominent and successful was Guasti that Mussolini even visited him at this mansion. Among the house's exceptional details are a flat roof, a serrated parapet, and an arching portico, says the report for its Historic-Cultural Monument status.
Through the use of various interpretive tools, however, the story is unfolding more expansively to include the many African Americans and their families who once labored and lived here, in slavery and in freedom. Arlington encompassed 1,100 acres, where Custis-owned slaves cultivated crops including corn and wheat. After the 1857 death of his father-in-law, Lee took over management of the estate, which his wife had inherited. It was a time of frustration for some slaves, who had anticipated freedom at the death of G. Lee, dealing with a complex will and large residual debt, called it “an unpleasant legacy,” and did not formally free the Custis slaves until January 1863. The Arlington household was noted for its gracious hospitality made possible by the enslaved people who worked in the Mansion and labored in the fields. Custis had an artistic and literary bent and was a noted orator, playwright, painter and federalist political partisan. His collection of Washington relics was the largest in existence, and he welcomed all to come and view them. The great political and cultural figures of the age gathered at Arlington House. Washington Irving dined at the table, as did the painter Charles Wilson Peale. Sitting presidents came to call and gather inspiration from the Washington mementos.
Maria would have been in daily contact with Charles Syphax who rose to a position of prominence and responsibility by managing the dining room at the Mansion. Maria and Charles fell in love and were married in 1821 in the mansion's family parlor. Although there is no DNA evidence, the circumstantial evidence of Maria's parentage is overwhelming. Maria Carter was raised as the personal maid and servant-companion of Custis's daughter, Mary, the heir to Arlington and the future wife of Robert E. Lee. In May 2009, Save Historic Arlington House (SHAH) was established as an auxiliary fundraising organization to help with the restoration, maintenance of the house and grounds, along with the preservation of historical memories of both the enslaved and free who lived there. With the Foundation's support, NPS has been able to replace window treatments, restore frescoes and acquire artifacts for exhibit.
You'll see a church designed by famed architect John C. Austin, a school building designed by Roland E. Coate, and a residence that was home to Fred E. Pierce, co-owner of Pierce Bros. And you'll learn about a Catholic-run military academy whose most famous former student was the actor Gregory Peck. Arlington Heights encompasses an area of Historic West Adams that was, at the turn of the 20th century, outside of the Los Angeles city limits. Following the ratification of secession by Virginia, federal troops crossed the Potomac and, under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell, took up positions around Arlington. Following the occupation, military installations were erected at several locations around the 1,100-acre estate, including Fort Whipple (now Fort Myer) and Fort McPherson (now Section 11).
Custis, subsequently, ran into financial difficulties while trying to build the mansion to Hadfield's specifications. As a consequence, he built only as he could muster the resources, selling enslaved people and borrowing heavily to finance construction. As Custis was unable to afford the preferred sandstone necessary for building the walls, the house was made of red bricks which were fired on the property by enslaved workers.
Over subsequent decades, the National Park Service, relying on limited Congressional funding, has struggled to keep up with the maintenance requirements of Arlington House as a historic property which receives hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Lee was then ordered to report to Washington, arriving home at Arlington a month later. Lee was offered command of the primary field army of the United States on April 18, 1861, but turned it down, saying he would not take up arms against his native state. Upon learning of his decision, General Winfield Scott, also a Virginian, told Lee "You have made the greatest mistake of your life, and I feared it would be so."
A West Point graduate and the son of a three-term Virginia governor, Robert E. Lee commanded the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Lees inherited the Custis estate in 1857 — including 196 enslaved persons, who lived and worked on the plantation. This landmark Craftsman was designed by noted architect Frank M. Tyler in 1908; the name comes from a senator who lived in the house.

Ida Jones, a historian and archivist at Morgan State University who studies African American history in the Washington, D.C., area, says Americans "need to see and acknowledge what happened at Arlington House."
The National Park Service interprets not only the history of Robert E. Lee and his family, but also the stories of the enslaved people, including the Syphax, Burke, Parks, and Gray families, to present a more complete story of life at Arlington House. When the War Department began the restoration of Arlington House in 1925, the knowledge of the formerly enslaved Arlington community proved an invaluable resource. Of particular assistance were Emma Gray Syphax and Sarah Gray Wilson, the daughters of Selina and Thornton Gray who lived in quarters just behind the mansion. Both were teenagers by the time of the Civil War, worked in the house, and were well acquainted with the daily routine of the Lee household. In 1929, the women returned to Arlington at the request of the War Department architect in charge of the restoration. They provided detailed information on the use of the rooms, furniture arrangements, the wartime occupation, architectural features of the slave quarters, and biographical details about the individual enslaved people as well as members of the Lee family.
